Welcome to February friends.
After enjoying some quiet in January, it’s time to get into organising and curating my home even further. Now even though I don’t like to own a lot of things I live with a whole other human who does not share that philosophy at all. It’s a situation that brings challenges. What I recognised last year though, is that I have become messier myself, and I don’t like it. Now you can only make decisions and change your own habits so I decided that this year it’s time to pull up my socks and revisit and renew some old habits of mine along with starting some new ones.
Looking around at the clutter that was mine, here’s what I know holds true for most of us
Clutter exists mainly for 3 reasons
1. You have too many things
2. Your things don’t have a designated place to live
OR
3. They do and you haven’t put them there.
Why you have too many things can be for a myriad of reasons. Hoarding. Disorganisation. Overwhelm. An inability to to let go of sentimental items or to separate your identity from your stuff. Collecting. Adding family members, children or extra tenants to the home. One may be that your home is too small for what you need to fit into it. However the most common reason is we just have too much stuff crammed into your space & we own far more than we need or use.
So. Moving into February I’ll be starting a year long curating mission in my home. I haven’t done this in a while so it should fun. Renewing my habit of organisation & tidying more often. Here’s the areas I’ll be working on reducing, curating, downsizing.
- Wardrobes – Clothes. Shoes. Jewellery & Bags
- Kitchen – Food. Containers. Gadgets
- Bedroom
- Laundry/Bathroom
- Spare Room – Wardrobes included
- Books
- Paperwork
- Electronic Files. Emails. Photos
- Crafts & Projects
- Home Renovation jobs
I want to curate and downsize in a way that involves using up products I’ve started. Finishing off crafts. Reading the books. Finishing jobs around the home that need doing and that we have the supplies for. Not just mindlessly throwing or donating items. It’s a slower process this way but the aim is to finish the jobs & crafts, read the books, clear the spaces & free up time. Slower, simpler living with less items. Enjoying these things, making use of them. Part of my personal overwhelm is from having too many things to do and spinning in place not knowing where to start. From renovations that have taken a long time and still unpacked boxes. Paperwork… so much paper. I’ve been getting through the jobs one at a time since the last quarter of 2021. Not stressing, just tackling them one at a time and that is what I’m going to continue with this year.
Holding myself accountable here to you guys. I’ll let you know where I’m up to every month. Join me this year in bringing more organisation and less stuff to our homes with the aim of more time for ourselves, family, friends & community. Slow living, simplicity and the exploring the things we truly want to do. Let us know in the comments what you’ve decided to work on this year.
Till next time friends
